How does one connect to peppar or salt from home with a graphical (X) connection?

The simple answer is that it is not possible.

Graphical (X) connections to peppar and salt are allowed only from departmental machines. The reason is to prevent people from using up departmental computing resources unnecessarily via such connections. It is not uncommon for someone to connect via a home computer and then forget about the connection; the program may run for weeks, consuming resources while not being used at all. Thus, to use the available resources optimally, X-connections from home are not allowed.

On the other hand, it is quite possible to run a program on peppar or salt from home, while displaying its graphical interface on the home computer. For more information, see http://support.cs.umu.se/software/usage/xserver.html .
